Review - Exposition

Artist: Stylus

In the niche world of "experimental" electronic music, the superfluity of mediocre material is undeniable, and the chances that the genre is altogether a misnomer are great as well. Though "Exposition" displays classic musique concrète characteristics, the cyclical, revised treatments of E.A.R. (aka Sonic Boom) immediately cancel any notion of experimentation in its pure form. This is atmospheric music with a flair for protracted iterations, and the comparisons to myriad glitch and ambient works are too numerous to mention. Subsequently, there's no sense of singularity here. That said, the circular composition and anemic themes work well at inducing hazy, déjà-vu sensations via the insouciant, elastic meter. But in the end that strength may also be its weakness. Resplendent yet prosaic, the uninspired treatments languish in their own dreamy dust without providing any crucial tension to tease the listener along.
