Review - Chocolate Chords

Artist: Terry Lee Brown Jr.

The dance-music genre of "deep house" represents how producers and DJs have developed a new feel for existing techno elements. By marrying a Brian Eno-influenced minimalist approach with straight beats, this style reaches those who want to dance and chill.

Terry Lee Brown Jr. highlights the strengths and weaknesses of deep house. Digital tones and lush backgrounds locked in place by the throbbing 4/4 beat provide the textures and pseudo-melodies. Tracks like "Looking Beyond" and "Let's Jazz" put your body in autopilot mode while your mind blissfully floats above.

Although hypnotic grooves and lush textures are hallmarks of deep house, they can quickly lend a sameness and a sense of frustration to the music. In the case of "Chocolate Chords," I'd leave the final verdict to a dance- floor jury.
