Were Jackyl a British band willing to admit that they were an AC/DC rip-off, they might sound a lot like Ten Benson. The burden of cultural irony prevents "Benson Burner" from being a completely guilt-free pleasure, but any band willing to wreck their guitar sound with "vintage" '80s guitar pedals is entitled to a little leeway. Elements -- Beefheart vocals, self-conscious riff-mongering, intentionally dumb lyrics -- betray nudges and winks that are entirely unnecessary, but if you traded in your pink Vinnie Vincent scarf for an Alice in Chains smack tourniquet, this record will make you wish you hadn't.
