Review - Anotherlatenight

Artist: Rae & Christian

It's time for Vol. 3 of the enjoyable "Anotherlatenight" series, which is Kinetic Records' answer to the similar and successful "Back to Mine" series. Rae & Christian are a great choice to follow up Fila Brazillia and Howie B. The U.K. duo (of Grand Central Records fame) has thrown down its usual mix of hip-hop, funk/soul and downtempo. It's mixed quite well, for the most part, with the occasional segues of "silence" between tracks for that palette-cleansing effect. And it works.

The track listing includes many of GCR's recent releases (Riton, Only Child, Mr. Scruff), as well as top-notch contemporaries (Zum, Faze Action and Pablo) and R&C's own productions. The true gems are toward the end, however, where R&C's instrumental covers of P-Funk's "Flashlight" and Rick James' original smoker's anthem "Mary Jane" melt into Jose Feliciano's flamenco-take on The Beach Boys' "California Dreamin'." Who knew?
