Punk-metal band Strung Out head to the Social

Saturday, Sept. 15 – Strung Out with the Swellers, Such Gold 7 p.m. The Social 54 N. Orange Ave. 407-246-1419 thesocial.org $18-$20

Twenty years is a long time to keep at any job, so it’s no wonder that Strung Out frontman Jason Cruz is ready for a change. He told the Phoenix New Times in a recent interview that he and legendary punk-metal band Strung Out are ready to “leave all this old stuff behind” and move the band to the next level – whatever that may be. So during this tour, they’re trotting out material from two of their most beloved records – 1996’s Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues and 1998’s Twisted by Design – before retiring them, possibly for good. Cruz, who’s been with the band since its founding in 1989, says he’s ready to do something different with Strung Out, which has become sort of legendary among the skate-surf set, some of whom probably learned to perfect an ollie by watching vids that used Strung Out as the soundtrack. If the band doesn’t succeed, Cruz insists, he’s going to call it quits. Because, he says, he doesn’t want Strung Out to be nothing more than what he calls a “fuck off band.” Which means if you’re a fan, you better catch them now, just in case this turns out to be the last tour ever. – Erin Sullivan
