Mojave Wilde
self-titled EP
self-released
★★★ (out of 5 stars)
In the past year, this young Orlando band has undergone considerable crystallization, and this taut debut EP is testament. In it, their sharp, lush sound – a modern pop tapestry that’s accented with urbane young folk and smooth white-boy soul (“Monte Carlo”) – manages to strike a symmetry between indie and commercial in ways that are effective and ready for liftoff. Breezy in mien but defined in stroke, it’s a work that shimmers with sun-kissed, evergreen innocence. And with the sophisticated sweetness shown on “Marigolds” and “Cadence,” Mojave Wilde could be a spark on the verge of catching. In case you missed their secret word-of-mouth release show in March, your next chance to see them live is coming up.
Mojave Wilde plays Will’s Pub 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, $5.
