New music: A Beautiful Chorus - Fierce Grace

I remember the first time that I really, really listened to Alexandrah Sarton's voice. I had been sleeping on what her vocals added to Sollilaquists of Sound for too long when a friend played me a rough mix of "Mr. Gun" off what would become In Curses' first album, Reaching Field. That friend was Sean Kantrowitz, who beyond writing much of the music on that album, is one of the most thoughtful music aficionados I've met since moving to Orlando. Suffice it to say that when Sean shows me new music, I tend to pay attention, and that was the case with this track, which I must have listened to 100 times despite the fact that it was a rough cut.

Sarton's voice is special: she has this delicate range that goes from the low-lows to the high-highs, and anyone who has ever seen her live can tell you that her voice, despite avoiding the flashy, throaty runs most of us assimilate with great singers, is simply powerful. And now she's surrounded herself with a group of female singers who can deftly color in the lines that Sarton draws: a Beautiful Chorus. Their newest video, "Fierce Grace," takes on a tribal feel both visually and sonically, but for me, it's still Sarton's subdued runs that take my listening experience to the next level. What can I say? When I fall, I fall hard. Watch the video below:
