Mac DeMarco will put us all on a steady ‘Salad’ diet

Album review: Mac DeMarco’s ‘Salad Days’

★★★★★ (out of 5 stars)

Get ready for more psychedelic cuts from this fascinating Canadian sonic cartwheeler. On his third release, multi-instrumentalist and trippy multimedia artist Mac DeMarco does more for leafy greens than that silly meme of women laughing alone with salad. Launching with the title track, it’s languid and digestible right from the start, but standouts “Goodbye Weekend,” “Passing out Pieces” and “Let My Baby Stay” act as the main course and provide justification to go on a steady Salad Days diet. His fuzzy rock tendencies from 2012’s 2 continue here, although Salad Days skews poppier and takes its lyrics a bit more seriously – unexpected from a musician whose live shows are totally goofy (as seen on YouTube; please pass a piece of you to Florida, Mac!).
