Eugene Snowden's Afrobeat band Umoja gets reunion show at Will's Pub this week

Every Afrobeat band is essentially a Fela Kuti cover band, doing its part to keep the fire of Kuti’s perpetual groove stoked and ready for future generations to discover. How fitting, then, that Orlando’s most charismatic musical showman, Eugene Snowden, got his start locally as the frontman of Umoja, an Afrobeat collective active from 1994 to 2002. The band takes its name from the Swahili word for “unity,” a principle reflected in the ability of a 10- to 20-piece band to lock into a groove and build something bigger than the sum of its parts. Let’s face it: You won’t find anything else that encapsulates the spirit of the season nearly as well on Black Friday.
