Canadian folk-pop outfit Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk tonight at Backbooth

with Kyle Cox

Canadian folk-pop outfit Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk flaunt their joyous grassy sound this week at Backbooth. Carried by singer Lauren Mann’s voice and uke, the Fairly Odd Folk expand their ruckus across the stage with burgeoning hits from their album Over Land and Sea, released April 9. The hook from the leading single, “I Lost Myself,” remains jingling in minds with its reverb whistle track and Mann’s cool vocal. The collection of songs reads like diary entries delivered over sweeping banjo and glockenspiel – the thoughts are fragmented and raw, and the music is warm and whimsical. Despite a simple setup and a never-ending tour, the Folk create a resounding living space to invite show-goers into. Opening act Kyle Cox has equally dreamy hymns – except his are songs for absent sweethearts and ephemeral affairs recounted by an Orlando man with an Americana air. – Billy Table
