The keeper of the Rahsaan flame, Joel Dorn, has been packaging the unreleased and hard-to-find music of his aesthetic mentor for decades. That's the good news. The bad news isn't that the latest Kirk live performance offering is lackluster ' in fact, it's quite powerful and entertaining. However, Dorn is attempting to channel the spirit of outrageousness that defined Kirk's polymath jazz into the more concrete aspects of the release. The title implies that this large concert from 1972 represents the African-American diaspora somehow sending musical shock waves through an emotionally stingy and xenophobic German audience, while the disc itself sports a picture of the 1936 Berlin Olympics giant-slayer Jesse Owens. Yet, by the time of this show, Germans had long been providing a large, steady paycheck for jazzers, and were considerably more supportive than Kirk's own countrymen. I'm not sure that they'd understand Rahsaan's cover of Bread's 1970 porno-ballad 'Make It With Youâ?� as a much wider request for spiritual communion, but I'd certainly give them more slack than the packaging and liner notes insinuate.
