An Afro-centric update of the Greatest Sitcom Ever isn't necessarily an asinine idea ' it could be a valid send-up of today's notions of neighborliness and upward mobility, Brooklyn-style. That's not what happens in this ill-thought-out money grab, which pratfalls into the pit between reinvention and homage, then wallows there in a muck of trite situations and half-baked characterizations. Cedric the Entertainer makes a passable addition to the legion of sub-Kramdens that have glutted pop culture since Gleason's heyday, but there's no forgiving Mike Epps' Norton, who manages to be both bland and unlikable. The lowest blow is when Cedric's Ralph tags him "the most ridiculous man I've ever met." A lot of us feel that the most ridiculous man we ever met was named Art Carney, and nothing about Epps' low-wattage sewer-rat routine is going to change our minds.
