Movies opening in Orlando this week

'Before I Go To Sleep,’ ‘Nightcrawler’ and ‘Saw’

Before I Go To Sleep S.J. Watson’s source novel was an out-of-nowhere phenomenon, thrilling readers across the globe with its story of a woman who awakes every morning with her memory wiped. OK, so we can define “out of nowhere” as “out of a place where nobody has seen Memento.” Which, I guess, is why this film adaptation – which stars Nicole Kidman in the Guy Pearce role – is being castigated on IMDB as a ripoff of 50 First Dates.Christ, it’s all enough to make you want to watch Shutter Island again. (But only if you can forget it immediately, of course.) (R)

Nightcrawler Making his debut as a director after penning Real Steel and that Bourne movie nobody gave an especial dookie about, Dan Gilroy takes us into the world of L.A. “crime journalism,” where chasing every squad car you see just might land you footage of the latest hot murder or hostage situation. Yes, it’s like being a paparazzo to crimes slightly more heinous than North West’s modeling career. (R)

Saw If the likes of Ouija have left you wondering what happened to the good old days when we were guaranteed a new outing with Jigsaw and/or his progeny every single flippin’ Halloween, you’ll have to make do with this one-week-only rerelease of the indie experiment in torture porn that started it all. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, when the promo materials for a Saw flick could actually carry the tag line “Straight from Sundance!” When we all looked at the Princess Bride poster hanging in our bedroom and thought, “OK, so maybe Cary Elwes can’t really act after all.” And when the entire graduating class at Full Sail peered out from behind its mountain of student-loan debt and declared “That I can do!” Gosh, it seems like just yesterday, not a full decade ago. In related news, I’m getting pretty fat. You? (R)
