Movie: Winged Migration

Our Rating: 4.00

An exciting new chapter in the annals of natural spectacle. Filmmaker Jacques Perrin (Micro- cosmos) documents the flight patterns of migratory birds, assembling four years' worth of breathtaking footage into a cross-species travelogue that's all the more amazing for its lack of postproduction enhancement. You wouldn't think that a camera could keep pace with a gaggle of Canadian geese, for example, yet there they are in perfect close-up, soaring in formation like leathernecks in a World War II movie. There's a dearth of detailed ornithological info, which may disappoint some. But it sits just fine with those of us who believe that encyclopedic knowledge of avian types is a gateway hobby to truly evil pursuits -- like coin collecting.
