When a slimy stock trader named Max Skinner (Russell Crowe, sporting man-boobs) inherits the chateau and winery once owned by his beloved Uncle Henry (Albert Finney), the effort on the greedy prick's part to sell the place where his grandest memories took place motivate him ' surprise, surprise ' to have 'a good year though it takes place over only a few weeks. Equally predictable: He finds the humanity and passion for life he lost to his staggering bank account. A Good Year deserves praise for the work of a cast of actors far too talented for its predictable, emotionally clichéd script and for the strength of Ridley Scott's aggressive direction, which continually demands our interest, but it's ultimately a so-so movie that does little more than answer what should've been an ironic question: What would happen if Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe made a romantic comedy?
