Spanish Wine Experience at Txokos Basque Kitchen, the 2014 James Beard Foundation Award national semifinalists dinner

Tip Jar: local food news

Preceding its opening the second week of February, Txokos Basque Kitchen at East End Market hosts the Spanish Wine Experience this Friday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m. Cost is $40 per person and will feature more than 50 wines including such varietals as Rioja, Ribera de Duero, Txakoli and Rias Baixas, not to mention plenty of chef Henry Salgado’s pintxos for the peckish. Call 321-972-8852 for more information.

If you can’t savor Salgado’s dishes Friday, you could drop a couple of Benjies and savor his dishes – as well as the dishes of Orlando’s past James Beard Foundation Award semifinalists, including Kathleen Blake, Scott Hunnel, Brandon McGlamery, James and Julie Petrakis, Kevin Fonzo and Hari Pulapaka – Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Alfond Inn. The dinner precedes the live announcement of the 2014 James Beard Foundation Award national semifinalists the following morning at East End Market; that press conference gets underway 10 a.m. Wednesday.

On Valentine’s Day weekend, consider the following: For $70, you and your loved one can learn the art of rolling sushi at the JW Griffin School at Marriott Grande Lakes Saturday, Feb. 15. The Oak Ridge Market at Artegon, the still-under-construction indoor farmer’s market at the former Festival Bay mall, announced an opening date of Memorial Day weekend. The market will showcase produce, meats, fish and dairy from local and regional purveyors and will also include a licensed community kitchen and classroom.
