If you grew up or went to school in Tallahassee, you know Newk's. The chain is based in Jackson, Mississippi, where the owners, the Newcomb family, live, and it was a staple when I lived in the capitol. Now that it's opening in the Waterford Lakes Town Center, it's bound to be full up with families and college kids looking for a fresh alternative that doesn't require table service.
Newk's is basically another iteration of Jason's Deli, with sandwiches, flatbreads, salads, soups and sides all made to order. Some
standout menu items include an arugula and prosciutto pizza, shrimp and avocado salad and a shrimp Po' Boy, hearkening back to the place's Delta roots.
On Saturday, Newk's is planning a pop-up picnic at 1448 N. Alafaya Trail, where they'll be giving out free sandwiches, sides and desserts on the house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Follow their opening date on Twitter
