Retro recipies for a smokin' summer

Summer's here, babies, and all the kooky cats and crazy chics are laying a patch for the beach or firing up the grill, and if you're hep to swinging jive, two volumes of cool are ready to help your bash.

"Retro Happy Hour and Retro Beach Bash," both by Linda Everett (Collectors Press; $16.95 each) are full of '50s art, hip recipes and cookin' ideas for, well, cooking.

"Happy Hour" has every recipe known to man, man, for dips, nibbles and drinks, including "Burnin' Luv Crab Dip" (crab and cream cheese, as if you couldn't guess) and the ever-popular brandy-soaked "Poolside Punch."

"Beach Bash" is half guide to the baggie and bodyboard life, and half barbecue extravaganza, packed with recipes like clam chowder for 30, spicy "Churasco Chicken" and "Beach Bunny Carrot Cake."

The illustrations are boss renditions of '50s life and the writing is groovy -- oops, wrong decade.
