Tip Jar: local food news

If it’s September, it must be Magical Dining Month. Like Orlando Weekly’s Restaurant Week, Visit Orlando’s monthlong affair is a highlight on the foodie calendar. The cost has gone up from last year, but $33 for a three-course meal isn’t bad, especially when you consider spots like Luma, Chez Vincent, Spencer’s, Oceanaire and K Restaurant are all participating. For a full list of restaurants, go to visitorlando.com/magicaldining.

Orlando Square Plaza, on the southwest corner of Sand Lake Road and OBT, is quickly transforming into a hotbed for all things South Asian. I told you about the Patel Brothers grocer and Sankalp the Taste of India in previous Tip Jars; now, right across the street, Lahore Grill is serving up some “Pak” to Sankalp’s “Indo.” In addition to Pakistani, Hyderabadi and Punjabi dishes, they also serve halal pizzas and gyros.

More WP news: Diva off the Park, the wine bar situated next door to Café 118 on Morse, will now be known as the NOPA Grill. (NOPA stands for “not on Park Avenue.”) The restaurant promises “urban rustic food” and “organic grill cuisine.”

Sushi Lola’s closed its doors Aug. 31 to prepare for a move a few doors down in the same plaza (next to the salon, in the former State Farm space). Hopes are for a late-fall reopening. Moving into Sushi Lola’s space sometime in October is P Is for Pie Bake Shop, specializing in made-from-scratch gourmet pies. Yesss!

East End Market opens to the public at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 … The Crooked Spoon Gastropub hosts a grand opening/ribbon-cutting Sept. 10, with a soft opening slated for a week prior … Hamilton’s Kitchen, at the shiny new Alfond Inn in Winter Park, has opened its doors … Disney’s California Grill reopens to the public Sept. 9 … Look for the Horse Power Bar & Grill to open in early September in the former Pipers Downtown space on Orange Avenue … The Oviedo Diner was destroyed by fire Aug. 16, but owner Tony Nikollaj has hopes of opening the diner in that very spot again. We wish you the best, Tony.
