CNN was in town a couple of weeks ago to cover a ground-breaking event: The opening of Pookie's Bow Wow Bakery (501 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park; 622-PETS), one of a few of its kind, certainly the first in Orlando.
This is no salon for the idle rich to indulge pampered pets with delicacies and toys -- although you'll find those items in the "paw-pourri" section. Owner Jim Grant is a serious believer in extending a pet's life, as well as improving the quality of it, through proper nutrition. He sells the same carob and peanut-butter biscuits he created for his miniature dachshund, Pookie, who runs around the store as tail-wagging proof. Grant also bakes bone-shaped "paw-ty" banana and carrot cakes ($14.95), with peanut butter icing, for special pet occasions such as birthdays and matings.
