New downtown restaurant Reyes Mezcaleria shooting for May Day opening

Jason Chin may have single-handedly injected new life into the gastronomic heart of Baldwin Park with Osprey Tavern and Seito Sushi, but his wife Sue Chin took restaurant interior design in that neighborhood to new levels.

Now the savvy pair are out to tackle the North Quarter and if these photos are any indication, their latest venture — Reyes Mezcaleria, in the former Citrus space — will wow the crowds on North Orange Avenue.

The pair have spared no expense, and everything from the furnishings to the accents to the art (some hand-painted by Sue herself) is designed to impress.

Executive chef Austin Boyd has a menu to match and says he's determined to serve the best tamales in town. Other items to look for:
  • Birria de borego (braised lamb shank, roast tomatoes, annatto rice, tortillas)
  • Duck emmoladas (duck confit, mole negro, pumpkin seeds, cotija, pico de gallo, crema)
  • Churipo (soup of ancho broth, skirt steak, pumpkin)
  • Elote (grilled sweet corn, cotija, lime aioli)
  • Tacos (carnitas, snapper, beef tongue, pork belly adobo and more)

Reyes Mezcaleria will serve about 50 mezcals and 50 tequilas and, says Jason Chin, mezcal flights will be served with chapulines — fried grasshoppers seasoned with tamarind, chilies and spices. They'll add a bit of buzz to your buzz.
