Louisiana flavor on Thanksgiving


Can't wait for Thanksgiving turkey? If you want to break out of the box for this year's dinner menu, try an alternative: deep-fried Cajun turkeys. Some restaurants are selling them as pickup catering orders.

Leo's Deli in Winter Springs (5934 Red Bug Lake Road) injects the turkeys with a Cajun-spiced citrus marinade, then deep-fries them to seal the juices. Last year the demand tripled. This weekend, owner Leo Holzenthal is bracing himself for a flood of last-minute orders for the 14-16 pound birds, priced at $45. If you want one, place a $10 deposit by calling 695-0708. Holzenthal expects to stop taking orders by Monday, Nov. 23, or even sooner. Customers can pick up their wrapped and bagged turkeys Tuesday or Wednesday. If you're just curious, the deli is offering taste samples this week.
