Five new spots enter the Orlando dining scene, three bow out

Lord have mercy, that's a big margarita.

As Alexander Graham Bell said, "When one door closes, another opens." Substitute "restaurant" for "door" and "two or three" for "another" and you've got a pretty good picture of Orlando's restaurant scene.

  • The Smiling Bison in Sanford has opened, cocktail bar and all.
  • Pepe's Cantina has opened in the former Mi Tomatina space in Hannibal Square. Did somebody say 2-liter margarita? Oh, that was us.
  • Hinckley's Fancy Meats has filled Local Roots' display case inside East End Market with locally farmed artisan meats. Owner Matt Hinckley was a former chef de cuisine at Michelin-starred Public in NYC.
  • Jack's Steakhouse in Baldwin Park will soon be known as Provisions & Buzz Co. Huh? Expect the rebrand to roll out to the public Nov. 5.
  • Look for the Beef Jerky Outlet to open in the Waterford Lakes Town Center by mid-November.
  • Remember Chili Daddy's on East Michigan Street? Well, that popular chili haunt is setting up shop inside the Dancing Pigs Deli on South Orange Avenue. Classic Texas Red will be available every day, along with one alternative chili (those flavors will rotate daily, but we remember the Thai basil chicken chili fondly).
  • NEXT! Frank & Stein's Winter Park has gone the way of Shipyard Brewing and Strollo's Cucina Due, which also closed in the same Fairbanks Avenue space. (Just saying: Dexter's did fine there a million years ago, before they tore it down and built the current building.)
  • Flying Fish Café on Disney's Boardwalk will close Jan. 31 for extensive renovations.
  • Best of Orlando 2015 award winner Brown's Deli in Maitland has closed. No more free half-sours. :(
