Eager beginnings at Starbucks

When it comes to java addicts, you'd think the staff at Starbucks Coffee would have seen it all. But even they are surprised by the enthusiastic reception at the new outlet in Winter Park (415 N. Orlando Ave., 628-4803). Even before they open at 6 a.m. on weekdays, it's not unusual for a handful of customers to be lined up outside.

The top a.m. request is "caramel macchiato" ($2.70-$3.45), a foamy concoction with vanilla, espresso and steamed milk, criss-crossed with caramel sauce on top. In addition to breakfast-blend coffees, "mocha Valencia" espressos and icy "frappuccinos," there are pastries and fat-free muffins. Those who have a few moments to savor their brew can retreat to the plush seating area, which is stocked with newspapers and has a rich color scheme of burgundy, eggplant, copper and chocolate.
