Barbecue in Old Florida backyard


Two suggestions if you're heading to the west coast for a long weekend: Avoid I-4 like the plague, and check out a good place to eat. Hop on to U.S. Highway 50 and stay on it. Just beyond Car-Dealer-Land lies a slice of Old Florida, with hills in Clermont, primeval forests around Brooksville and the kitschy glory of Weeki Wachee Springs.

Forty-five miles from downtown Orlando is the cattle and truck-farm town called Webster, the home of the Webster Flea Market. Across from the market is a little treasure called Cowboy Country (599 N. Market Blvd., 352-568-7676), replete with gingham curtains, framed photos of Roy Rogers and succulent barbecue. We're talking smoked ribs, chicken with a crispy skin and juicy interior, home-made mashed potatoes and breaded okra, an endless iced-tea glass and waitresses who call you "Hon." Even lunch portions are huge, so leave the house hungry.
