Sunday Film News Roundup -- April 21st, 2013

The Onion absolutely nailed it with their headline the other day, "Jesus, This Week".

To ignore everything else that happened this week, lets take a look at the the 2013 Festival de Cannes, which announce the main competition and Un Certain Regard lineups (and special screenings) this week.

It looks like a great lineup, featuring the likes of Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God ForgivesAlexander Payne's NebraskaAsghar Farhadi's The Past, the Coen Bros Inside Llewyn Davis, and most importantly to me, Hirokazu Koreeda's  Like Father, Like Son. There are more films that look great and make me jealous of the writers who will be there as well, but those are the ones that stick out from the competition slate for me.

But we run into a kind of strange variation of the female director problem again, with only Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and her Un Chateau en Italie in competition. Its a variation of the problem because the Un Certain Regard slate features so many female directors. Six of the fourteen Un Certain Regard films come from female directors, like Sofia Coppola, Clare Denis, and Valeria Golino. So why not have some of them in competition instead? It's curious, especially after all of the heat the festival has taken over the last couple of years.

-I'd be perfectly fine with Seth MacFarlane hosting the Oscars again, if only to see all everybody lose their shit again. (Next Film)

-Some great photos of (mostly) French actresses, like  Charlotte Gainsbourg, Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroani and Sofia Coppola by Kate Barry. (Everyday I Show)

-Is fandom actually killing television? (Grantland)

-Sebastian Junger on the documentary he's making about his Restrepo co-director, Tim Hetherington, a combat photographer who died during the fighting in Libya. (IndieWire)

Trailers, posters, etc:

-The trailer for the new Satoshi Miki film, It's Me, It's Me! If you haven't seen his previous film Adrift in Tokyo, it's available on Netflix right now and it's wonderful. (Twitch)

-This TV spot just made me lose all hope for Pacific Rim being a good film. (Movieline)

-A short, unsubbed teaser for Francois Ozon's new film, Jeune & Jolie (Young & Pretty), which will play Cannes this year. (Playlist)

-Romeo and Juliet just looks like a boring adaptation, at least compared to Baz Luhrman's and Franco Ziffrelli's. (Moviefone)

-An adaptation of the novel Syrup with Amber Heard. The only thing I really remember about reading the book was that I hated it. (Apple)

-The last time I talked about Kiyoshi Kurosawa's new film it was called A Perfect Day for Plesiosaur. It's since been renamed to the rather dull Real. (Twitch)

-A trailer for some sort of "super" man. (Yahoo)
