Short Film Friday: The Early Works

Vinil Verde (Green Vinyl) (Portugese w/ English subs) Dir: Kleber Mendonça Filho (Neighboring Sounds) Runtime: 17m In this spooky still frame short, a little girl is given a small collection of records by her mother, who has only one request: never play the green one. We'll set aside the fact that the whole unfortunate incident could have been prevented by not including the forbidden green record, but there is still the fact that when your mother asks you not to play the green record, listen to her.

Alive in Joburg Dir: Neill Blomkamp (Elysium) Runtime: 7m Alive in Joburg is the original shortfilm that Blomkamp and Sharlto Copley shot before moving on to the bigger version, Distric 9. Personally (and I'm surely in the minority), I like Alive in Joburg more than D9. It's a very good example of how to take a big idea and squeeze it's essence into something short and powerful.

Jenny Clone Dir: Maggie Carey (The To Do List) Runtime: 13m Before she had Aubrey Plaza to play with, Maggie Carey played with dolls in this messed up short about a spoiled brat who gets the worst-best birthday present ever: a clone of herself. Bill Hader and Carey add the voices.
