Selection Reminder: Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival!

Saturday, Oct. 15Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival

As the final showdown in the Southern Regional Dragon Boat Association Point Series, this weekend’s daylong International Dragon Boat Festival pits both local (including Orlando Rowing Club) and traveling rowing teams in a match-up on Buena Vista Lagoon. Dragon Boat racing, a Chinese water sport that goes back nearly 2,500 years, traditionally joins a crew of 20 paddlers, a coxswain (also known as a steerperson) and a drummer on an ornately designed long, narrow boat as they row in unison towards the finish line. Similar to most Chinese customs, it seems like a pretty simple concept, but add in steep season-ending rivalry, Orlando’s potential for inclement weather and Disney’s entertainment spark and, ladies and gentlemen, it looks like we’ve got a full-on aquatic battle. – Aimee Vitek (8 a.m. at Downtown Disney West Side, 1478 E.
