Save the Space: More fundraisers seek to support the DIY venue

This weekend, Space Fest 2 occupied the Space to raise money to keep the DIY venue moving forward (for rent, repairs, general upkeep and other costs that keep cropping up). Thanks to donations from artists and a sweet lineup of local bands (and a neat-o zine from Space-friendly literary groups Literocalypse, Welcome to Anxiety, and the Emperor's New Prose), reports are coming in that they raised $3,000 to go directly toward owed rent, improvements and maintenance of the Space.

If you missed out on Space Fest 2, you have a couple other opportunities to donate to the Space, including a Save the Space show at Uncle Lou's on March 7 (RSVP!). It's six bands for $6, curated by rad promoter Non Prophet Organization, including American Party Machine, Yogurt Smoothness, Tight Genes and more (see the flyer to the right), and 100 percent of the money collected will go towards the Space. There's also a special show scheduled at Alms Apparel, a new vintage shop whose launch party is on Saturday, Jan. 24 (RSVP!) and features GRÜVV, Frankasaurus Fresh, DJ Fiona Trapple and VSN QST, with proceeds from the event going toward the Space. According to their Facebook page, 25 percent of the shop's monthly sales will go towards a different charity, and the Space is the first case Alms Apparel has taken up, so if you shop at Alms Apparel, you'll also be supporting the one-of-a-kind arts space and much-loved DIY venue.

Now, with new information that the Space is for sale, many might ask whether all this support has come too late, but the reality is that the Space has functioned at a loss to keep serving Orlando's creative culture for a while, and if there's a future (which it looks as though there will be!) either at the current location or beyond, they'll need to settle all debts first.
