I learned long ago never to be judgmental, but I set aside that lesson in my anticipation of "BASEketball," the new flim starring Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the hit cable cartoon "South Park." I thought, "C'mon! There's no way these guys can act. Talented in production, maybe, but acting? No way."
Wrong.
"BASEketball is about two guys who invent a new sport that combines basketball and baseball, but without the hardplay that usually leaves less aggressive players as spectators. After the game becomes nationally popular, the creators face the lures of women, fame and money, in addition to challenges on their friendship.
Directed and co-written by David Zucker (the man behind the "Naked Gun" series) "BASEketball" is filled with countless sight gags of surprising creativity. It crosses the line of shame many times, providing a platform perfect for the "South Park" creators, and a place to prove they can -- omigosh! -- act. Imagine my shock when I walked out of the theater astonishingly impressed.
Shame on me for being so judgmental.
