Mother Mary comes to me

In the aftermath of the holiday, I just received word that much-loved UCF screenwriting teacher Mary Johnson has passed away. Mary had been suffering from colon cancer for several years, and finally succumbed at 12:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Full details are best left to those who knew her, well, best – meaning her daughters Leah and Beth, who had continued Mary’s blog as her condition worsened.

Mary was rightly revered by the Orlando film community; she was particularly tight with the Haxan/Enzian axis of the early aughts, who had ceaseless praise for her abilities as a teacher and a screenwriter in her own right – and the highest marks for her qualities as a person. I knew her as a friend, a bright soul and an energetic champion of the cinematic arts, and whenever I chanced to run into her, my day was always the better for it.

Black Friday, indeed. I’m thankful and grateful to have known her.
