When it comes to celebrating one’s culture, the Germans know how to do it right: They guzzle down ice-cold das boot beers with gusto, they cook up some mean meat-and-potato dishes, and to celebrate camaraderie, they participate in beer-stein holding contests and schunkeling (the elbow-to-elbow sway that becomes all too common after five too many altbiers). They devote 16 days to the “sport” of drinking and eating with a yearly Oktoberfest, which is such a popular tradition that everyone stateside wants to hold their own version of it. Locally, we’re lucky enough to have access to a traditional Oktoberfest celebration hosted by the German-American Society of Central Florida. Expect live music by Alpine-folk six-piece Sonnenschein Express, dancing by Orlando’s own Schuhplattler Gruppe Alpenrose troupe, homemade Bavarian fare and an ever-flowing amount of beer in the biergarten. You don’t have to be German to play along – you just need to bring your $5 and your appetite. Prost! – Aimee Vitek
