Fringe Review: Skill Focus Burlesque Does Fringe

As someone who spent much of his virtually sexless adolescence playing Nintendo and Dungeons & Dragons instead of going on dates, all I have to say is, where the hell were girls like this when I was in high school?!? Director Dorothy "Ruby Darling" Massey's Skill Focus: Burlesque -- my favorite Orlando exotic entertainment troupe created by nerds, for nerds -- has brought the venerable art of striptease to the Fringe, and festooned it with geek-bait frills.

Each of SFB's Fringe shows sport a different theme; the performance I attended was inspired by video games, with Star Trek, comics, and horror nights still to come on the schedule. On my viewing, the audience got an eyeful of Princess Peach and Super Mario (super disturbing), a Fallout vault dweller (with Pip-Boy and nuclear nipples), Half-Life's Gordon Freeman (head-crab and crowbar in hand), Sonic the Hedgehog (watch those golden rings!), and even Portal's GLaDOS, all in the flesh and in their undies -- or even less.

The overall experience is a combination of DIY cos-play couture, cheerful cheesecake, and groan-worthy comedy -- think Rocky Horror without the rice. If you enjoy ogling hot nekkid chicks (and a couple of unclothed boys) and understand references to Dr. Horrible and Aperture Science -- you know who you are -- arrive early with your dollar bills and sit up front.
