The young Cornerstone Theatre Co. will stage a weekend-long run of David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People, a Southie-set exploration of class, loyalty and shame, as the first show of their ambitious first full season. On the eve of the play’s Broadway premiere in 2011, the playwright discussed its tangled and uncomfortable themes with the New York Times, saying, “We have this myth that if you work hard, you can accomplish anything. It’s not a very American thing to say, but I don’t think that’s true.” This is the first time Good People has been staged in Orlando, and though the Boston setting is an inextricable part of the play, the idea that good things do not, in fact, always come to those who try is one that any city walloped as hard by the real estate meltdown/unemployment figures/healthcare costs as this one can appreciate, Southie accent or not. – Jessica Bryce Young
