You wouldn’t know it by watching his YouTube demos, but Alvin Aki is a jack-of-all-trades: Not only is he a skilled origami artist, Aki is also a storyteller and singer at Epcot’s Japanese pavilion, and he’s a film actor who had roles in National Lampoon’s RoboDoc and Tyler Perry’s upcoming The Marriage Counselor. Despite the lackluster performances seen in his origami videos, we’re thinking the in-person attentiveness Aki offers at this workshop (which coincides with his current Origami exhibit at the library) will go a long way when it comes to teaching the intricate art of paper folding. Specializing in “modular folds,” which use up to 30 sheets of paper, Aki will hopefully start with the novice crane or dove, and then move toward animated creations like the hopping frog and the striking cobra. Just go with the “it looks harder than it is” approach. Hopefully you’ll walk away with a novel new skill with which to wow your friends. – Aimee Vitek
