He was known as the “father of urban realism,” and through his paintings, Algerian-born-turned-Parisian artist Andre Renoux depicted everyday streetscapes of a 1960s City of Light. His works trade the postcard-perfect Eiffel Tower backdrop for back-alley corners, sidewalk produce stands, storefront sweepers and table-side window views. Our appreciation lies in how Renoux took an alt-approach to capturing one of the most romantic cities in the world – if he painted our most touristy city, it would be an oil-on-canvas of Will’s Pub instead of Cinderella’s wistful castle. See the difference yourself, as the Polasek houses a collection of the famed painter’s works – original oil paintings, lithographs and hand-painted wine bottles – throughout the summer, and offers guests a chance to sketch their own masterpiece inspired by Renoux’s city scenes. – Aimee Vitek
