Central Florida has blessed the world with more than its share of underground metal worthies – Obituary, Morbid Angel and Nocturnus, to name a few – but, for our money, one of the undisputed greats would have to be Massacre. Massacre, helmed by death metal OGs guitarist Rick Rozz and vocalist Kam Lee – also infamous from stints in cult legends Mantas and, of course, Death – birthed one of the classic albums of the death metal genre with the 1991 release of From Beyond. The album still sounds fresh and challenging to this day, lean and streamlined, catchy and (yes) brutal, bursting with signature Rozz riffs and Lee’s subterranean bellow. Orlando Weekly still treasures our cassette copy of this album, down to the unsettling Ed Repka-rendered aliens on the cover. Their reputation and influence only grew over the years, and now 2019 sees Lee and Rozz reconvening the band, along with original Massacre bassist Mike Borders and drummer Mike Mazzonetto, to the delight of a cult following slavering for their return to the stage. Big-time festival gigs have already been lined up in far-off locales from Germany to Peru to Puerto Rico. This Orlando show is a warm-up, a musical flex, for their headlining slot on the Fuck the Commerce fest in Germany. This is the only Florida date scheduled for the band thus far, and pretty much the only one on this intimate a scale. Head over to Discogs, snap up the Tyrants of Death comp and do your homework.
