In response to pieces of anti-abortion legislation passed in states like Alabama and Georgia, a pro-choice protest will take in downtown Orlando on Sunday, starting in Lake Eola Park and ending at Orlando City Hall.

Protesters will meet at Lake Eola at 11 a.m. and march to City Hall by 12 p.m., where they will hold up signs in hopes of fostering conversation about abortion and women's rights, according to the event page on Facebook.

Specifically, the protest singles out the anti-abortion law passed in Alabama  last week, as well as "heartbeat bills," which attempt to prohibit abortions as soon as a fetus' heartbeat is detected, recently passed in other states. Opponents of the draconian legislation argue that six weeks into a pregnancy term is long before most women realize they're pregnant.

Under the Alabama measure – which was signed into law last week by Alabama's second female governor, Kay Ivey – abortion is prohibited in nearly every circumstance, with the vague exception being if the pregnant person's life is at risk. The law provides no exceptions for cases of rape and incest and is considered the most restrictive abortion law in the country.

The Alabama law also includes a penalty for those who perform abortions of up to 10 years in prison.

"Our lawmakers need to know we will not allow our rights to be taken laying down," protest organizer Alyssa Leann writes on the Facebook event page. "We will take to the streets!"
