The Psychedelic Furs have spent decades toeing that very tricky line between being enigmatic dark-pop icons and John Hughes soundtrack mainstays in ways that many of their ’80s contemporaries haven’t managed. Hence, they retain a certain mystique and underground cachet, while their hit singles regularly get drunkenly bellowed at high-school reunions and old wave nights. The band isn’t chained to one particular song; they can effortlessly toss out a stacked deck of hits across albums like Talk Talk Talk and Mirror Moves. They visited the City Beautiful last back in 2017 for a heavy show at the Plaza with Bash & Pop, but this gig is even more notable for its intimacy. The U.K. post-punk band are returning to Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel to headline their Velvet Sessions series. This isn’t the band’s first Velvet Sessions rodeo – they’ve played this event several times, with sunglasses firmly in place and dramatic gestures on lock, naturally.
