Florida's largest medical marijuana provider, Trulieve, announced Thursday that its already selling smokable cannabis, with its first sale of the product to a patient at a Tallahassee dispensary.

The move comes days after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation repealed the state's ban on smoking medical marijuana.

Trulieve says it will offer a rotating selection of popular whole-flower strains at all 26 of its dispensaries statewide, according to a press release. The company also plans to roll out smokable medical marijuana in a variety of forms, including pre-rolled.

"Offering these whole flower products in our patients in their purest, most effective form is something we – and patients – have been looking forward to since we opened the doors of the state's first dispensary," says Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers.

The Office of Medical Marijuana Use recently announced that the medical marijuana patient registry had surpassed 190,000 members with active ID cards in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Health, Trulieve consistently sells between 60 to 80 percent of the state's overall volume.

Despite more than 71 percent of Florida voters overwhelmingly approving the medical marijuana amendment in 2016, state legislators almost immediately enacted a ban on smoking the medicine, prompting a number of challenges in the courts before DeSantis, a Republican, took office in January.

A bill that redefined the term "medical use" to include possession, use or administration of marijuana in the form of smoking passed the Florida Legislature earlier this month.
