Following last week's revelation that Facebook allowed the Trump-backed consulting firm Cambridge Analytica to harvest raw data from 50 million users, Orlando law firm Morgan & Morgan is now suing the social media giant.

Morgan & Morgan attorney John Yanchunis filed the first civil lawsuit Wednesday in the Northern District of California on behalf of Facebook user and Maryland resident Lauren Price.

Price is accusing Facebook and Cambridge Analytica of negligence and violating a California unfair competition law. The complaint reads, "Plaintiff brings this suit to protect her privacy interests and those of the class,” and seeks to prevent further "negligent, deceptive, unfair and unlawful business practices" from the defendants.

This is the first of probably many lawsuits seeking damages over Facebook’s inability and inaction to protect its user's data, as well as Cambridge Analytica’s exploitation of that data to help President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

"The recent disclosure of the violation of the privacy rights of 50 million consumers who use and trusted Facebook represents yet another troubling example of a company’s failure to maintain the security of information consumers provided," said Mr. Yanchunis in a statement. "Even more alarming is the fact that Facebook executives knew several years ago that these violations occurred and chose to keep silent about it."

Facebook released a statement last week announcing the suspension of the London-based Cambridge Analytica from its site.
