Sometimes the simplest questions are the most profound. We’ll admit to feeling that Candy Chang’s Before I Die project – a chalkboard wall on which viewers are encouraged to share their top bucket-list goals – was, well, a bit simplistic when we first experienced it at the Creative City Project in 2012. But the enthusiasm of a respected friend made us take a second, deeper look into Chang’s work. Maybe it all comes down to this – you get out of Chang’s work what you put into it. If you treat Before I Die as a fun selfie opportunity, then that’s all you’ll get out of it. If you allow the work to help you examine your feelings about mortality, you’ll get a lot more. Chang will talk about the project and how it has been received in the more than 3,000 cities and 70 countries (including China, Iraq, Argentina, Russia, Haiti, Kazakhstan and South Africa) where it’s been installed. If you’d like to participate in this iteration, visit rollins.edu/candy-chang/input-form.php with your blank-filled-in version of the sentence “Before I die, I want to _________.” Responses will be displayed at the event.
