West Orlando residents will have better access to fresh fruits and vegetables with the grand opening this Saturday of the Parramore Farmers Market.

Starting on Jan. 6, the Parramore Farmers Market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market is located outside the Orlando City Soccer Stadium on the east side. In the past, Parramore has been called a "food desert," which is an area without ready access to healthy and affordable food at grocery stores.

"The farmers market is part of City of Orlando's efforts to provide access to quality, fresh and healthy food in West Orlando neighborhoods and will also help in giving residents the opportunity to start or grow a business by encouraging entrepreneurship," Mayor Buddy Dyer said on Facebook.

In 2016, the city was awarded a $250,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture to expand healthy food options in West Orlando. Aside from creating a farmers market, the grant's initiatives also included creating 10 to 15 "farmlettes" in residential front yards and teaching local residents about nutrition in partnership with Hebni Nutrition.
