'Black Christmas,' the best holiday-themed slasher flick, is playing at Avalon Island tonight

Not the tepid 2006 remake but rather the pulpy, pitch-black 1974 original, Black Christmas is not only the best holiday-themed slasher flick right after the first two Halloweens (with apologies to John Waters’ fave, Christmas Evil), but the finest cinematic rendering of the urban-legend staple “The killer is calling from inside the house!” ever attempted.

Heavy on atmosphere, dementedly imaginative death scenes and genuine jump-frights, the tale of a deranged maniac killing the residents of a sorority house (including a young Margot Kidder) one after the other is the perfect way to mark the death throes of the Christmas season.

Wed., Dec 27, 7 p.m. | The Gallery at Avalon Island, 39 S. Magnolia Ave. | 407-317-8367 | avalongallery.org | $5-$7
