Body cam footage shows Florida police officer getting dragged a half-mile by fleeing driver

An officer with the Pembroke Pines Police Department was seriously injured yesterday after being dragged a half-mile by a fleeing suspect.

The above video shows officer John Cusack, a 19-year veteran with the force, responding to a call of a man and a woman unconscious in a parked car at a retirement center.

According to the police report, Cusack noticed a small baggie of an unknown substance in plain view. The driver, Thomas Cabrera, then woke up and tried to take off with Cusack clinging to the door.

After falling off the car, Cusack was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries to his arms and legs.
Cabrera, who was eventually stopped around at 9 a.m. on Interstate 595,
was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.

Cabrera told police that he fled because he didn’t want to go to jail and because he and his fiancée were doing heroin and cocaine in the car before the officer woke him up.
