Twelve Orlando police officers headed to Puerto Rico on Monday to help as the island recovers from the destruction left by Hurricane Maria.

Deputy Chief Orlando Rolon says officers will be headed to the Carolina and San Juan areas to help Puerto Rican authorities direct traffic and assist with patrol shifts.

"They're still struggling when it comes to power," Rolon says. "There are over 400 intersections without power."

Rolon says 120 officers wanted to participate in the program to help Puerto Rico, but the department had to narrow it down to 12 officers.

"This is the first group we're going to send," he says. "We're going to see in the future whether we'll be sending additional deployments."
