Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has thrown his backing behind Anna Eskamani in the Florida House District 47 race.

"Anna truly represents the Democratic Party’s future," Dyer says in a statement released by the Eskamani campaign Tuesday. "She is a rising star in Florida politics and in our community. She works hard each day to deliver results and gets things done for the people of Florida, and I have full confidence that we will be in good hands with Anna representing Orlando in the Florida legislature."

Eskamani, 27, is running for the seat that goes through Winter Park, Orlando and Belle Isle and is currently occupied by Republican state Rep. Mike Miller. The incumbent is reportedly running against Democratic U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy. Up until recently, Eskamani had no challenger, but in late July, Winter Park Republican businessman Stockton Reeves filed to run in the race, according to state election records. Dyer, Orlando's longest-serving mayor, has endorsed Miller in the past.

Eskamani, who works as the senior director of public affairs and communications at Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, says her campaign has raised more than $100,000 since she announced her candidacy on July 3.

"As an Orlando native I cannot think of a more meaningful endorsement," Eskamani said Tuesday. "Mayor Dyer has led our City through triumph and tragedy. I am honored that he trusts me to be an effective partner and advocate in the Florida Legislature. … There is a lot to fight for these days, and many who are counting on us. I won’t let you down, and we will never leave anyone behind."

Orlando Commissioner Patty Sheehan has also endorsed Eskamani.
