Young West Coast deathtrip freaks Death Valley Girls perfectly embody the various hues of Los Angeles’ weirdo heritage, be it the witchy menace of the Manson girls, the Runaways’ total trash, Iggy passed out on the Sunset Strip, the deathrock vileness of the Hell Comes to Your House comp or the pulpy seduction of Hollywood Babylon. Visual evidence bears this out too, with the band looking like a school folder collage of the Cramps and the Jesus and Mary Chain. But the proof is always in the sonic pudding and Death Valley Girls truly shine with their occult soundtracks (including a few albums for slack tastemakers Burger Records), an immediate brew of shoegaze, C86, the Brian Jonestown Massacre and a dash of the Gun Club. We’ve read a few intriguing things about the members sporting black cloaks onstage and writing “666” on their foreheads; is it for real? Who cares! See you at the séance.
