Florida Confederate monument could be replaced with statue of Snooty the manatee

This past weekend, Snooty, the world's oldest captive manatee, died in a freak accident at the age of 69. Now, a new petition looks to immortalize the beloved mammal by replacing a controversial Confederate monument with a bust of Snooty.

As of today, a recently created Change.org petition urging Manatee County legislators to go forward with the Snooty statue movement has garnered more than 4,000 signatures.

"Snooty the Manatee has been a symbol of Bradenton ... for almost 70 years," writes Anthony Pusateri, the petition's author. "To honor Snooty's legacy as a positive icon in Bradenton, I propose that the negative symbol of racism and oppression that is the Confederate monument be relocated and replaced with a statue of Snooty the Manatee."

Pusateri argues that the Confederate monument, which stands directly in front of the Manatee County Courthouse, "could be moved to a museum (or other more appropriate location) out of everyday public eye and a more positive symbol then take its place" – you know, like Snooty.

Bradenton's Civil War monument, a tall obelisk with a Confederate flag engraved on the side, dates back to 1924, and was erected by the local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Local officials are aware of the petition, but so far there has been no support from City Hall.
