Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 big-budget NC-17 feature about a stripper who dreams of becoming a Vegas showgirl may have bombed at the box office, but it’s certainly given us plenty of lulz over the years. From numerous drinking games to tongue-in-cheek DVD bonus features that tell viewers how to give a proper lapdance, Showgirls now exists as a bona fide cult classic. So of course the only way to kick the camp factor up any further is for a bunch of drag queens to act it out, right? Written, directed and produced by Emmy-nominated producer Beth Wheatley (Eastsiders) and actor Stephen Guarino (Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here), Showgirls in Drag had a successful run in L.A. before this production in the creators’ hometown. Mr. Ms. Adrien, Cara Cavalli and Tora Himan add their own snarky take to the bitchy backbiting that characterized most of the female relationships of the original, and these ladies can definitely show the audience how to “Thrust it!”
